Administrative history

Afrapix was a collective agency of amateur and professional photographers who documented Apartheid South Africa through their photographs in the 1980s. At its height there were 20 members, and up to 60 "stringers" which had an affiliation and would do projects for Afrapix.

The items numbers for the images in this collection differ from the digital identifyer assigned by the AA Movement Netherlands for the description and the digital file naming. However, this number has been provided as Ref.no. in the field "System of Arrangement".

ARCHIVAL NOTE ON NUMBERING: The numbering of this series is out of sequence, as the time span for Afrapix remains within the 1980s, and any photos beyond that, including some by Eric Miller, Aron Mazel, Guy Tillim and Cedric Nunn have been left out. Some by David Goldblatt taken prior to the existence of Afrapix were part of an Afrapix project/exhibition that was shown in the 1980’s, and have therefore been included.
