Biographical and administrative history: Dieter Gerhardt was convicted of treason for passing information to the Soviet Union over a period of several years, and given a life sentence in 1983. After the Indemnity Act was passed in 1990 he applied for indemnity but did not obtain his release. In June 1992 he made an urgent application to The State President, the Minister of Justice and Minister of Correctional Services for his immediate release as a political prisoner and was given indemnity.
