The collection contains correspondence, minutes, documents, registers, cash books, memoranda, printed items, photographs and plans relating to the Diocese of St.John's, Cathedral Church of St.John the Evangelist, Holy Cross Mission, St.Barnabas' Mission, St.Cuthbert's Mission and St.Mark's Mission.

The records illustrate the work done by the S. S. J. E. in the various fields of education, health, translation and evangelising.

The St. Lucy's Hospital was opened in 1908, and there was also a mission farm. These activities continued over the years, and the St. Lucy's Hospital became a well-equipped modern teaching hospital serving a wide area.

This collection consists of Heads of Argument, Judgment and correspondence (records).

The collection of James Humphreys contains company reports, notices to shareholders, articles in mining journals, press clippings, correspondence and photographs relating to the mining of gold, coal, metals, minerals and precious jewels in South Africa, Bechuanaland, Nyasaland, Rhodesia and East Africa.

Subject matter includes metallurgy, geology, mineralogy, mining law and legislation, labour and the recruiting of Black labour, mining history, personalities and Rand Pioneers and mining groups, covering the years 1926-1967.

Sets of slides with taped commentaries, received from the Multi-media library in July 2003.

These shows were made for the History Workshop in the late 1970s and 1980, some in association with the American Social History Project.

There is a detailed description of each show in the History Workshop Media Centre catalogue (hard copy only), stored in Room 2.

The Wits History Workshop in 1978 introduced what would result in a series of conferences. Their focus was to present and discuss historical, sociological, political, literary, economic and anthropological aspects of the lives and experiences of the ordinary people mainly on the Witwatersrand and the larger region of the Transvaal. Initially these conferences were spaced at an interval of three years, and subsequently took place in 1978, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1999.

This collection seeks to consolidate the programs and papers that were presented at each of the thematic conferences.
