The letters are interesting, not only giving a good picture of the work of the Anglican church in various parts of Africa but also fore-shadowing some of the political problems which have arisen in Africa such as the racial friction between black and white, the colour bar in South Africa and the church's attitude to it and the question of the native franchise. From the letters it appears that there were problems common to the various dioceses such as the shortage of clergy, need for more money, the importance of educating the African and training African priests and the difficulties of working in vast areas where parishes were scattered.

This is interesting material giving the outline of a life purely from official documents, supplemented by references to Crockford (? Orford).

It gives some insight into the legal requirements of a licensed clergyman in the Church of England 1874-1893.

Note books and Registers.

The papers relate mostly to the life of George Wolfe Robert Tobias (1882-1974). This correspondence gives an excellent description of the Church's work in South West Africa and also of the conditions and customs of the tribes living there, both written and pictorially. The papers also touch on the Kwanyaaa language in which George became so successful. He translated the Prayer Book and produced a hymnal. Ho also translated Hermann Tones 'Kwanyama Ora Emar' from German into English.

Canon Charles Frederick Tobias (ca 1850-1939), George's father, and a converted Jew, in correspondence to his wife, Ethel, also gives an interesting account of life in the field, where he served as Chaplain in the Boer War 1900-1901.

The papers also consist of the skeletal draft of the biography of George Tobias by Rev. Basil I. C. Turvey which contains a vivid description of the life of George and his work on the mission station and the people connected with him and a brief description from the Encyclopaedia of Southern African South West Africa.

The collection contains documents relating to the ordination of women to Priesthood in the Anglican Church. Included are records of correspondence of Ellen Davis with clergy from various churches, as well as a pamphlet on women priests and practical issues.

The collection contains annual College photographs of the staff and students at the St. Bede's College in Umtata.
