Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF) collection

  • ZA SAHA AL3290
  • Archief
  • 2002 - 2009

The APF collection consists of paper-based and digital documents, posters, ephemera, audio-visual and oral history materials. The documents, ephemera and audio-visual materials were collected by Dale McKinley over a two year period through the APF’s own office; through individual leaders/activists/members both at the APF and community affiliate levels, and through his own substantial personal archive accumulated over a period of ten years as a co-founding member, activist and elected leader of the APF. His countless handwritten notes found all through the collection, but particularly in sections pertaining to meetings, are testament to his commitment to and involvement in the APF on many levels. In many instances where minutes are absent, McKinley’s handwritten notes are the only records documenting a particular meeting in this collection.

The APF collection has been arranged into three distinct series for the paper-based materials, the digital born materials, and the oral history materials. The audio-visual materials, posters, t-shirts, banner and stickers have been described as a further series in the inventory. However, the posters have been added to the SAHA Poster collection (AL2446) and the t-shirts, banner and stickers to the SAHA Ephemera collection (AL2540). The call numbers for these items have been added to the inventory to facilitate access. The posters, t-shirts, banner and stickers have been digitised.

The original order of the paper-based collection has mostly been retained. Materials relating to meetings, e.g. minutes and related documents, were not regrouped into the various APF committees and sub-committees, but rather kept in chronological order, together with related material to show the organic progress of development in terms of APF campaigns and APF work-related issues.

Although the digital born series holds many of the documents contained in hard copy in the paper-based collection, a decision was made to arrange this as a separate series, as the original order of materials differs from that of the paper-based collection. The order on folder level has been retained, and on item level rearranged in a chronological order.

The oral history project materials have been arranged into two sub-series of audio interviews and transcripts in alphabetical order by interviewee surname.

Mafela Trust collection

  • ZA SAHA AL3289
  • Archief
  • 1990 - 2009

The Mafela Trust collection consists of paper-based materials, digital materials, photographs, oral history interviews (audio cassettes and Hi8 video cassettes), and VHS video material.

The original order in which materials were received was not retained. A discussion with the Mafela Trust's national coordinator revealed that no proper filing system was in place in the office of origin, and his subsequent artificial order (defined by sections Vatican A, B, C etc.) did not allow for effective and systematic arrangement and retrieval of archival materials. (Meticulous record-keeping allows for reversal of current arrangement). The current system of arrangement embarks on an attempt to reflect the organisation's developmental history in terms of its aims and objectives, and thus allows for more effective access to the materials.

The paper-based and digital collections of the Mafela Trust archives have been arranged as two separate series. Although some duplication of documents exist, especially with materials created around 2000 onwards, the first series of paper-based materials contain archives that were generally created prior to 2000, and includes a fairly large number of handwritten and manuscript material. 49 items (625pp) from this series have been digitised to facilitate access. The digital collection commences circa late 1990s/2000+. It should be noted that the arrangement of the paper-based collection does not correspond with that of the digital collection.

NEUM Basil Brown Collection

  • ZA SAHA AL3459
  • Archief
  • 1988 - 2011

The collection of publications had been categorised (A-E) during a preliminary sorting by the donor. These categories have been retained as the main series in the arrangement of the collection.

A Historic Literature

B Presidential Addresses

C APDUSA

C1 Presidential Address by I.B. Tabata

C2 APDUSA Views

D NUM Bulletin

E The Education Journal

The Historical Literature series (A) is arranged in chronological order by the earlier publication date and not necessarily the date of publication of the re-issued titles and later editions found in this series. For example 'The Origin and Development Segregation in South Africa' a lecture by W.P. van Schoor was originally published in 1951. The publication in this collection is the lecture re-issued as part of the Unity Movement History Series, published by APDUSA in 1986.

The Presidential Addresses series (B) is arranged in chronological order.

The APDUSA series (C) is arranged in two subseries: Presidential Address by I.B. Tabata (C1) and APDUSA Views (C2). The APDUSA Views are arranged in chronological order by publication date for the first view issues and by the issue number for the remainder of the issues. This allows for current missing and further issues to be incorporated into the series without disrupting the order.

The NUM Bulletin series (D) is arranged in chronological order by volume and issue numbers to allow for current missing and further issues to be incorporated into the series. A subseries 'Special Bulletins' was added to accommodate a 'Special' issue and two anniversary issues. The Special Bulletins could not be included with the main series of NUM Bulletins due to an absence of volume and issue numbers for these issues.

The Educational Journal series (E) is arranged in two subseries due to their provenance and separate numbering systems. The Educational Journal was published by The Teachers' League of South Africa from 1967-1999 as their official organ (E1) and by NUPSAW Education Sector from 2000-2016 (E2). Both subseries are arranged in chronological order by volume and issue number (E1) and by publication date (E2) to allow for current missing and further issues to be incorporated.

After consultation within NUM the decision was made to include the name of Basil Brown in the collection name. Dr Basil Brown is the current President of NUM.

SAHA is expected to receive further material from the donor in the future. Additional material may include follow-up literature from NEUM/NUM/TLSA – Educational Journals as well as more recent publications from NUM.

While the collection at SAHA consists of a selection of NEUM and NUM publications, personal papers of individuals involved in these organisations are in the custody of the University of Fort Hare National Heritage and Cultural Studies (NAHECS) and the University of Cape Town Special Collections.

Constitution and Civil Society Project Collection

  • ZA SAHA AL3297
  • Archief
  • 2014

The oral history component forms series A of the collection. Interviews have been arranged in alphabetical order by interviewee surname within each region: A1 - Cape Town, A2 - Durban, A3 - Gauteng.

Research materials form series B and project documentation series C of the collection.

The oral history and research component form part of the broader project collection on the Constitution.

Dale McKinley conducted the thirty-three oral history interviews in 2014 in three regions - Cape Town (12 interviews), Durban (3 interviews) and Gauteng (18 interviews). He submitted the audio-recordings (MP3 format) to SAHA by region and this order has been retained for the purpose of archival arrangement. The transcripts, transcribed by Victoria Hume, are accessible online. Consent were obtained from interviewees to make their interview materials publically available.

A collection of related research materials on crucial constitutional rights cases as well as academic, legal and activist materials written over the past two decades submitted by Dale McKinley in electronic format is also part of this collection.

  • 2002-2003

The South African History Archive (SAHA) and Historical Papers were approached by thirty seven people, who were imprisoned on 22 September 1981 and detained for anything from fourteen days to just under one year, to document and preserve their stories. The interviewees are: Cedric de Beer, Hannchen Koornhof, Maurice Smithers, Prema Naidoo, Norman Manoim, Caroline Cullinan, Emma Mashinini, Merle Favis, Pravin Gordhan, Audrey Coleman, Gavin Anderson, Barbara Klugman, Cedric Maysom, Kathy Satchwell, Alan Fine, Monty Narsoo and Joanne Yawitch. A number of the detainees (Rob Adam, Barbara Hogan, Alan Fine, Hannchen Koornhof, Prema Naidoo and Shireesh Nanabhai) went on trial and, in the case of Hogan and Adam, were jailed until the release of political prisoners in 1990. Neil Aggett died while in detention. Whilst other people were detained during this period, the detainees listed here were picked for their links to one another.
