Katlehong Township, Records

It also includes Advisory Board and Management Committee minutes and correspondence. Other organisations involved are the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, National Development Foundation, South African Institute of Race Relations, South African Bureau of Racial Affairs and the Transvaal Municipal Association.

Mafeking Mail

Originals of a newspaper brought out during the Siege of Mafeking, numbers 1-152, from the 1 November 1899 to the 31 May 1900.

Also included is a preface page, issued by the publisher after the siege, relating the events in the publishing house during the siege whilst having to produce the Special Siege Slip.

This collection records social history in South Africa from circa 1880-1970. The photographs were collected by Luli Callinicos for the History Workshop, in the Department of History at Wits. They were donated to Historical Papers by Prof. P Bonner in 1999. A few of the photos are duplicates of those in the Pearson collection of early Johannesburg, but have been retained in the History Workshop collection as it provides a very extensive portrayal of the social history of South Africa over a long period.

Papers of Madinda Tshabalala

Notebook of Madinda Tshabalala containing his thoughts about African Nationalism, Pass Laws, Black Consciousness and Native Service Contracts. He was an ordinary and probably one of the founding member of the Pan Africanist Congress, arrested, detained, jailed and under house arrest for his political activities between 1960 and 1983.

The Bavenda

The softcover publication was part of the series "The Bantu tribes of South Africa: Reproductions of photographic studies" entitled "The Bavenda", by A.M. Duggan-Cronin, with an introductory article on the Bavenda and descriptive notes on the grayscale plates by G.P. Lestrade, Ethnologist from the Native Affairs Department of the Union of South Africa.

Edwin John Harris

The booklet was compiled and written by Bill Goldsworthy. In it he relates the story of the New Zealander Edwin John Harris which is closely connected to the history of the "Steinaeckers Horse" Unit, which was formed during the South African War (1899-1902). After the war EJ Harris was involved in several more conflicts in Natal, German West Africa and in German East Africa.
