The records that make up the collection constitute two discrete groups. The first record is a ring-bound copy of the submission that Behr had made to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in 1996 on his activities as a paid spy of the South African Police and later as an agent for the African National Congress (ANC).

The second set of records is correspondence between Behr and Brandon Hamber of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) in which they discuss the modalities for the “coming out” of spies and the possibility of victim-offender mediation. The correspondence spans the period 9 February 1997 to 26 April 1997.

All Zapiro’s cartoons are drawn with a very sharp pen. Nonetheless only one of his cartoons has ever been ‘pulled’. A cartoon depicting former President FW de Klerk’s responsibility (as head of the Apartheid State and its security forces) for the atrocities that emanated from the notorious “Vlakplaas”, with De Klerk’s head as the proverbial tip of the iceberg, was ‘pulled’ by The Sowetan, for whom the cartoon was drawn. The newspaper was of the opinion that the cartoon was potentially defamatory. Zapiro had therefore to replace De Klerk’s head with that of Eugene de Kock, the self-confessed commander of “Vlakplaas”. Both cartoons form part of the Collection.

This collection was initially arranged by subject matter. In order to portray the sequence of events during the TRC the cartoons have now been arranged by year.

The articles that make up this collection are not dated in terms of the year in which they were written, but rather by day and month. The reason for this phenomenon is relatively simple: Terreblanche donated the electronic copies that she had written for Independent Newspapers to the SAHA/HP Special Project on the TRC in the same format in which she had submitted them to Independent Newspapers - sans year, but with indications for which edition the articles were written: that is, for the morning or evening newspaper, or for a Saturday or Sunday edition.

In addition Terreblanche sent SAHA the articles as clusters without paying strict attention to chronological order with respect to the dates of the days. Nonetheless the author of this inventory conducted an online search and was able to ascertain in which year the clusters of articles were written.

In order to maintain the order in which Terreblanche had written the articles, they appear in this inventory in the chronological order and in the groups determined by Terreblanche, not according to topics or issues such as 'Reparations', or 'Presidential Pardons', for example.

On a final note: the title and dates on each article document the title given by Terreblanche and the date on which she submitted the respective article to the newspaper house.

In the case of the article being published, the (edited) article appears under a title determined by the Editors, and on the date determined by them.
