This collection consists mainly of personal diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks of holidays, proposed publications and commentaries. This collection includes 460 items.

The TRC Archival Audit

SAHA and Historical Papers, University of Witwatersrand have embarked on a project to locate and retrieve records relating to the Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC). The project entailed conducting an archival audit of all existing TRC records in order to identify and locate documentation in danger of being lost.

In the process of conducting the archival audit, SAHA and HP located many collections from individuals and organizations that participated in the TRC process. Selections from these materials as well as TRC related material found in the freedom of Information Collection and other pre-existing SAHA and HP collections, were digitized and can be accessed online at http://truth.wwl.wits.ac.za/.

Printed letter, 8 Feb. 1930, in Afrikaans, addressed to members of the Van der Merwe family on the history of the family, asking for donations to set up an association and mimeographed account in Afrikaans of the murder of Willem Nicolaas Van der Merwe on 1st Feb. 1825 at the farm Hou-den-Bek.

Also called the Anglo-American Corporation Commission of Enquiry into the Incidents of violence that occurred at certain shafts at the Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Co.Ltd. during the latter portion of 1986. The Commissioner was Adv. D.A. Bregman, SC. Delegates included delegations from Transkei and Lesotho, as well as representatives from the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the Department of Manpower, Anglo American Corp. and Vaal Reefs. The venue was Vaal Reefs, Klerksdorp.

The Commission stretched over some nine to ten months and consisted of some fifty days of hearings. Submissions from the delegations suggested that the violence occurred as a result of faction fights between overall Xhosa-speaking and Sotho-speaking workers on the mine, that took place during November 1986 and December 1986 at the No.1 and No.2 Shaft hostels.

The Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining company, owned by Anglo American Corporation, was formed with 11 shafts by the 1980s, which made it one of the world's biggest gold mine at the time.

The Urban Research Services Group was formed in 1988 and provided support, in the form of a research capacity, to civic associations in South Africa, such as the South African Civic Association (SANCO).

The papers consist mainly of historical information on USSALEP, minutes, correspondence, records of the various projects and individual files on management committee members and some exchangees. Not all files have been retained; in the case of fundraising correspondence and individual files a sample was considered sufficient to indicate the scope of the project for historical purposes. There is a certain amount of duplication; for the convenience of researchers the minutes have been collected separately in D and additional copies may be found in the correspondence files and mailings to members; material of historical interest may also be found in correspondence files, which are a rich source of information on the organisation. Some photographs are in the original personal files and some have been assembled under N. A number of photos are not identified.
