The Institute for Advanced Social Research (IASR) was based at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Archival history
These photographs were found abandoned in a cupboard in an empty room in the Richard Ward Building at the University of the Witwatersrand, and were rescued by a member of staff of the School of Social Sciences. Prof Bozzoli thought that they might have belonged to the IASR and suggested giving them to Historical Papers.

Received from Trish Milliken of the School of Social Sciences in October 2003.

The photographs contain images of conflict in South Africa, mainly in the 1980s and during the State of Emergency, but also of forced relocations, domestic workers, women involved in resistance and of children.

The main body of the collection is contained in sections A-D, all of which relate to exhibitions in which they were used. This order has been retained.

The photographs were taken by Afrapix photographers in the 1980s. All photographs are subject to copyright, and permission must be obtained from the respective photographer.

Physical characteristics and technical requirements
The photos are mostly in folio size. Sets A-D have been received being mounted on cardboard, and most are laminated.
All of the photographs have been digitised and are available to researchers.
