Biographical history
Noel Stott was educated in Cape Town. He obtained his B.A. and B.Bibl (Hons) degrees as well as Higher and Final Diplomas in Library and Information Science from the University of Cape Town UCT). In the 1980s and 1990s he was employed by UCT in various librarian and research capacities. Noel Stott also worked for the Southern African Catholic Bishop's Conference (SACBC) and the Institute of Contextual Theology (ICT) as a Documentation, Communications and Research Officer. He was also one of the founding members of the South African History Archive (SAHA), where he spent almost 20 years serving as a volunteer Board member of the SAHA Trust and its various management structures. Noel's involvement in SAHA'S activities also included collecting 'struggle' material and representing the Trust on fact-finding/study tours/missions as well as securing founding. Since 2002, he has worked for the Institute of Security Studies (ISS) with a focus on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation with particular reference to Africa's development and the threat of weapons of mass destruction.

This collection contains various primary material reflecting the early year of the SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORY ARCHIVE (SAHA) and its activities: Deed of Trust, Management and Employment Policies, Minutes of Board and other Meetings, Annual Reports, Financial records, and Funding Proposals. It also includes detailed records relating to a dispute between Noel Stott and SAHA (2004-2008). Other records in this collection include: documents relating to the XII Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Durban in 1998, reports, papers and publications on violence in South Africa and various ephemeral publications, including material of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the African National Congress (ANC). Additional material includes: Speeches by Nelson Mandela and Conscientious Objection and the End Conscription Campaign. The collection was donated to Historical Papers between 2008 and 2013.
This collection contains records relating to Noel's involvement in various ways in the struggle for justice and human security in our country as well as his service in administrative and research capacities to many NGOs and other community based organisations. This material was collected by Noel over a number of years.
