Note

Biographical and administrative history: Much of the background of this case is set in Alexandra Township during the years 1984-1987. It is this township that organisations such as the "Alexandra Youth Congress' and the "Alexandra Action Committee" emerged. Their aim was to put pressure on the authorities to remove the army and the South African Police who were present in the township. During the years 1985-1987 their was much strife and violence in the township, eg the burning of houses, murders and general intimidation. This is clearly seen by the number of mass funerals that occurred. The Youth of the township established 'People's Courts' i.e. they are not legally constituted courts and administer their own justice, and the community were intimidated into not reporting ordinary crime to the South African Police. In this case the court held all the accused were guilty of sedition.
