Biographical and administrative history: The case arose from an incident in which a crowd of people attending a funeral in Duduza attacked and killed a woman, suspected of being a police informer. The accused were found guilty of murder but there were extenuating circumstances in that there was a feeling of almost hysterical aggression in the crowd and the accused were considered to have diminished responsibility. The case went on appeal and the sentences of nine of the original accused were reduced.
