Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was established in terms of the Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act , No 34 of 1995, and was chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It was a court-like restorative justice body was assembled mainly for the victims of violence during Apartheid, but also hearing the testimonies of perpetrators of violence who were seeking amnesty.

The Commission presented the 5 Volumes of its final report in 1998.

The Friends of Cuba Society

The Friends of Cuba Society, (FOCUS) was founded in 1990. It is the collective name for a number of associations in South Africa which exists to promote solidarity with Cuba. They are a non-profit voluntary organizations which aim to: promote international solidarity through dialogue, exchange and action between Southern Africa and Cuba as well as organize activities to deepen the level of friendship and understanding between the peoples of South Africa and Cuba. Their common objectives are the following: to promote the development of economic, social, religious, cultural and political links between Southern Africa and Cuba, to build partnerships with social movements in Cuba around issues of common concern, to provide essential information on relevant issues related to the Cuban Government and peoples' situation, struggles and aspirations, to build partnerships with social movements in Cuba around issues of common concern. Membership of these groups is open to all persons and organizations who subscribe to their aims and objectives.

National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA)

NUMSA was founded in 1987 as one of the largest affiliate of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), and remains the biggest metal workers trade union. It was expelled from COSATU in 2014 and is now one of the biggest affiliate in the South African Federation of Trade Unions which was formed in 2017.

National Progressive Primary Health Care Network (NPPHCN)

The National Progressive Primary Health Care Network (NPPHCN) is a national non-government organisation founded in 1987, to advocate for the implementation of a national health system for South Africa based on the principles of the Primary Health Care (PHC) approach. It consists of a group of health and development projects, health worker organisations and individuals who are committed to an idea of Progressive Primary Health Care or P.P.H.C.

South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU)

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) was founded on 24 October 1987, as a merger of Municipal Workers' Union of South Africa , Cape Town Municipal Workers' Association (CTMWA), the Municipal workers' sections of General Workers' Union of South Africa, South African Allied Workers' Union and Transport and General Workers' Union. These unions were once individual affiliates of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, to which SAMWU also affiliated. Later SAMWU also incorporated other Municipal Workers Unions from Durban and Johannesburg.

Department of Education (DoE)

By the end of white minority rule in 1994 South Africa and its ten independent homelands had eighteen departments of education. Four of these were national, four more were provincial and ten were homeland departments. After black majority rule came about in 1994 a new, single, national department was established, and it was named Department of Education (DoE). The three former national departments and the homeland departments were ipso facto abolished. In December 1994, the four provinces were altered. Two were renamed but retained their boundaries, and the other two were split into seven new provinces. Each province duly established its own department of education.

Transvaal Education department (TED)

The Transvaal Education Department was first formed in 1876 as a unit within the independent Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR). The Department endured through all subsequent annexations, wars and vicissitudes until the end of white minority rule in 1994. In December 1994, the Transvaal province was abolished and split into four new provinces.

The Human Rights Institute of South Africa is a non-profit, non-governmental organization incorporated under Section 21 of the Companies Act, 1973. It was founded in June 1993 as the Institute for the Study of Public Violence and served as the research and documentation arm of the Commission of inquiry into Public Violence Chaired by Judge Richard Goldstone.
