Story of a young Zulu girl employed by a White family in Durban, and her boyfriend, who resorts to theft as he cannot get a work permit. After serving two gaol sentences, he finds salvation and peace by converting to Islam.

Unpublished literary manuscripts of novels, plays, short stories and poetry, in English and Sesotho. The subject matter is primarily the relationship between the black and white peoples of Southern Africa and the problems of the urban Black. Included are a collection of short stories on Tongoland and an autobiographical sketch in which he describes the clash between the Basuto and the authorities during the Witsiehoek Commission of Enquiry, 1949.

Oupa Koos

A young Griqua leaves his family and finds work on a farm, Vandyksrus in the O.F.S. During the Boer War his master is imprisoned by the British and Koos proves his loyalty to the family. The farmers daughter falls in love with him, and on her fathers return, Koos has to flee to Ladybrand, and give up his love.

Short Story

Young woman leaves husband and goes to the city, where her aunt runs a shebeen in the location. She finds employment as a domestic servant.

Typescript of the final version of the manuscript, with corrections and additions included. Notes are provided by Stephen Gray, copy editor. The manuscript also includes photocopies of a newspaper article containing comments and reviews on the book.

Also included is the 2008 release of the book "The World and the Cattle", published by Penguin. The book is kept in the Reading Room of Historical Papers.

Manuscript Collection of short stories, including Festival on the River Tongo which gives an account of tribal custom and way of life in Tongoland, and the education of the youth within the Mophato.
