The Germiston City Council issued eviction notices to 18 families living in an area known as Asiatic Bazaar. They were living there in homemade zinc structures, many of which were partially open to the elements. The Council tore down some of these structures and some of the more permanent brick structures. The LRC was approached for assistance. Representations on humanitarian grounds to the Germiston City Council and its attorneys resulted in the provision of interim relief.

This was based on the premise that the claim to the land comprising part of the Lohathla Battle School was valid, but that it was not in the public interest that the land be restored.
