Bulbulia, MAE, National Union of Metalworkers, and others

MAE Bulbulia was the presiding officer at a hearing in which the others, workers at Sydmore Engineering who had been dismissed in June 1986, were making representations concerning the late filing of their case by the union. They applied for a condonation of late submission. Bulbulia granted this, reasoning that the twelve workers should not be denied justice because of a bureaucratic error. Sydmore Engineering management took the matter on appeal. The LRC represented the workers and the case was settled when Sydmore Engineering agreed to pay each worker R2500.

Williams, P

The case of Pierre williams, arrested for rape and murder of a 10 year old child. He was convicted and sentenced to death, against which he appealed in the Constitutional Court.

Kayi, E

In December 1985, E Kayi's son was shot dead by a policeman after a fight. The father was away at the time of the inquest (case no GO3998/85) and unaware of his rights in terms of the Police Act, which provided for a claim should the police be found responsible. The prescribed period had passed by the time he approached the LRC for assistance. An appeal for an ex-gratia payment was lodged with the Minister of Law and Order and R517 was awarded.
