Adams, F and 10 others; Van Heerden SV and others

The two cases in these files both concern residents of Westbury who had been forced to live in untenable conditions and were unable to obtain housing from the Johannesburg City Council. It was learned that twelve new houses had been built in a part of Westbury known as Western that were going to be used for university students. The Westbury Residents Action Committee protested and the council decided not to use the houses for students. Some residents decided to move into the houses and were arrested for trespassing. This happened again shortly after. The LRC assisted all those arrested for trespassing and in most cases the clients were acquitted or the charges dropped. One client paid a fine of R50.
