United States-South Africa Leader Exchange Program (USSALEP) records

  • ZA HPRA AG3237
  • Fonds
  • 1955 - 2003

The papers consist mainly of historical information on USSALEP, minutes, correspondence, records of the various projects and individual files on management committee members and some exchangees. Not all files have been retained; in the case of fundraising correspondence and individual files a sample was considered sufficient to indicate the scope of the project for historical purposes. There is a certain amount of duplication; for the convenience of researchers the minutes have been collected separately in D and additional copies may be found in the correspondence files and mailings to members; material of historical interest may also be found in correspondence files, which are a rich source of information on the organisation. Some photographs are in the original personal files and some have been assembled under N. A number of photos are not identified.

KAIROS, records

  • ZA HPRA AG2918
  • Fonds
  • 1970 - 2002

The collection material covers the years 1970 to 2002. Much of the material consists of copies with some exceptions. In co-operation with a large number of non-governmental organisations involved in human rights issues an extensive collection of reports, publications, pamphlets, telegrams and telexes, newsletters and letters was collected.

Later material, particularly in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission section was added from Internet news services and the TRC web site. There are a few letters from and to Kairos, but the bulk of the collection is Kairos' research and resource material. Kairos also developed a database and researched reports on detention, torture and deaths in detention for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Kairos research reports and publications are to be found in most of the sections.

Kairos has also donated audio-visual tapes of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings. A list of these is available at Historical Papers. A small collection of ephemera consists of campaign buttons, stickers and postcards. A collection of posters contains campaign posters and a series of exhibition posters. Books donated by Kairos have been added to the Africana Library.

Tuli Elephants, Records

  • ZA HPRA A2926
  • Fonds
  • 1995-2002

The collection contains court records, correspondence, notes and press cuttings relating to the legal matter between the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) and African Game Services / African Game Properties, held at the Magistrate's Court for the District of Brits, held at Brits.

Between 1998 and 2000, thirty wild baby elephants were forcibly removed from their mothers and families in Botswana and taken to South Africa, where their spirits were intentionally broken for captive exhibition and display to feed the trade in wild animals.

Because of the conditions under which these elephants were 'trained', a case of cruelty to animals was brought against wild-life dealer and owner of African Game Services (AGS), Riccardo Ghiazza, and his employee. Five years later they were found guilty. The legal wrangle around the Tuli elephants illustrated how weak animal protection legislation is in South Africa.
