'Surgery on trestles; a saga of suffering and triumph'.

The collection contains Archbishop Ndungane's personal papers which include speeches, addresses, articles, statements and press releases, sermons, correspondence, awards, newspaper clippings and his diaries.

Other records in this collection are relating to the various activities of the Bishop during his reign and his involvement with organizations, institutions and projects in South Africa and abroad. These documents include theological education including clergy and Anglican schools, various universities in South Africa, CPSA developments, SACC activities, missions and ministries, episcopal synod, bishops consensus, diocese of Cape Town and some others in South Africa, various churches and their communities, religion in public life, women's and youth issues, Apartheid debt and other issues, poverty and housing matters, HIV/AIDS, Global Fund, and USAID.

The inventory consists of 2 parts: the first part AA contains the Personal Papers of Archbishop Ndungane. The second part A-Z relates to Bishop Ndungane's Working Papers, and the filing system in alphabetical order has been retained as it was received from the office of the Archbishop.

Certified copies of letters and documents supporting the claim of the Struben Brothers to be the first discoverers of gold; articles of association and minutes of shareholders meeting of the Sterkfontein Junction Mining Syndicate 4 Mar. 1884; mining maps including A new geological map of the Transvaal by F. Struben, London, 1889 and 'A geological section of the Witwatersrand' drawn by Fred Struben in 1885, reprinted from the Transactions of the Geological Society of South Africa, vol. 50, 1947. 9 photographs (by H.F. Gros) of the Strubens' Confidence Reef 1886 and of Johannesburg 1887 and 1889, used as Christmas greetings cards; 2 postcards from water-colours in the Africana Museum, Johannesburg, one of the Struben Brothers Camp at Wilgespruit as sketched by Edith Struben in 1885 and the other of the Old Farmhouse before the discovery of gold by J.W. George.

Including diary kept by Edith Struben (daughter of H.W. Struben), 1885 and 2 diaries by Mary L. Struben (wife of H.W. Struben), 1884-1887; letters between members of the Struben and Lys families, including correspondence of Godfrey Lys (nephew of the Strubens), Fred, Harry, Edith and Mary Struben.

There are two bound volumes numbered 4050 i and 4050 I. Both are transcripts of an manuscript by John Bruce entitled "Sketches of the political and commercial history of the Cape of Good Hope", but 4050 1 has 8 extra pages in front of the main work entitled "From the Earl of Macartney to General Dundas on his resigning the government to him". This copy is on microfiche.

4050 I is from the Phillips' Mss 20643, and was presented to Lord Macartney by John Bruce on 17 December 1796, just prior to Lord Macartney's leaving England to take up office as Governor of the Cape.

This work on the Cape consists of 443 pages and is divided into five sections.

Material submitted together with the original artwork of Chancellor House, the offices of Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, the first black legal practice in Johannesburg.
