In 1974 SASO/BPC members were arrested for staging Viva Frelimo rallies at Curries Fountain and at Turfloop University, and charged. They were Saths Cooper, Muntu Myeza, Strini Moodley, Patrick ‘Terror’ Lekota, Nchaupe Mokoape, Pandelani Nefolovhodwe, Nkwenkwe Nkomo, Kaborone Sedibe and Zithulele Cindi. Their trial, officially known as 'State vs Cooper and Eight Others', dragged on for 16 months, after which the accused were found guilty and sentenced to five and six-year terms on Robben Island.

Steve Biko appeared as one of the defence witnesses in the trial in May 1976, and his testimony is included in the court records. The records also include 'The Definition of Black Consciousness'.

The collection contains the research working papers of Elaine Katz, which mainly relate to gold mining on the Witwatersrand, Silicosis in miners, Labour and South African politics, particularly in the Transvaal at the turn of the 20th century.

Copies of letters, including Lady Crewe's letters, unfinished page of a memoir of C.P. Crewe, Unionist Party minutes 1910-1920 and reminiscences of J.M. Orpen.

The collection of Dr Ronald Edwin Press includes an Autobiography, a multimedia CD, photographs and various reliquaries of the South African anti-Apartheid struggle.

The collection was compiled by Dr. Ronald Edwin Press, (Ron Press), during his recent years of retirement. It reflects on his lifelong involvement in the Union movement of South Africa, the 1956 Treason Trial, banning, exile and subsequent activities as a technician of the ANC underground struggle, in various operations, including Operation Vula.

The collection includes membership registers, administration records, minutes before and after the merger. Some sections of the collection is focuses on municipal departmental themes and topical issues.

Included are statements, submissions and evidence presented to the Commission of Inquiry, affidavits, papers and press cuttings relating mainly to hostel violence on the reef between 1990-1992.
