Police arrest a student at a demonstration in central Cape Town

The protest was against Republic Day celebrations set for the next day and police broke up the protest. A policeman grapples with demonstrating University of Cape Town (UCT) students in central Cape Town. Students hang on to a student the policeman was attempting to arrest. Five people were arrested.

Colin Cairncross rejoicing at a suspended sentence

Teacher, Colin Cairncross (22) , is hoisted shoulder high by jubilant supporters after being given a 5 year suspended prison sentence for aiding the outlawed African National Congress (ANC). Ten other men were jailed for a total of 83 years for their involvement in guerilla attacks in the Western Cape.

Runners wearing T-shirts with slogan: "Mandela - freedom at 70"

A team of 5 runners left from near Pollsmoor prison at the start of a relay scheduled to end at a Gugulethu Sports Stadium as part of the Mandela 70th birthday celebrations. However the runners were arrested shortly before arriving in Wynberg. Police and military also sealed off the Stadium in Gugulethu and prohibited the sporting events which were due to take place there.
