The NZA funded political parties in South Africa and occasionally other organisations. Documentation for each party contains project proposals, general correspondence about proposals, evaluations and reports detailing how funds wre spent. It should be noted that the Management Board of the NZA approved the projects. This information is in 11.1.1.5.1. and 11.1.1.5.2.

From the mid-1980s, KwaZulu Natal was the scene of intense political violence between supporters of Inkatha, the ANC, UDF and other parties. The SAP was seen to support Inkatha, further fuelling the violence. The violence threatened to derail the move towards democratisation, and continued after the first democratic elections in 1994.

This material documents covers a range of subjects relating to detention and trial and in some cases mention particular detainees.

These cases come from the Kairos database with information about torture and/or death in detention and supported the work Kairos carried out for the research department of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The database was not finished and sources of different files may not be complete. The numbering reflects the case file numbers allocated by Kairos. Each file has a summary sheet of information compiled by the Kairos researchers. Some reports are filed together. Access restrictions apply to this database.

These files were compiled by Kairos and contain clippings, affidavits, court documents, and letters to SA Government ministers and overseas organisations. There are also reports from NGOs and churches active in these areas. Newspaper clippings cover the conditions, the protest activities and government responses to resistance. Some of these communities initiated court actions and tried to negotiate with the authorities on decisions taken to resettle them.
