Sekhoto, S and Makhoba, K

On 26 February 1987 members of the South African Police arrested and assaulted S Sekhoto and K Makhoba at Natalspruit, Alberton. They claimed to be looking for comrades. A claim for damages was lodged against the Minister of Law and Order. Material includes a certificate of registration for a motor vehicle, medical reports, court papers and research material.

Tarentaal, F

The client's son, a minor, was arrested on 17 June 1982, and detained in the cells at John Voster Square. While there, he was assaulted by other cellmates. As a result he suffered severe injuries. The LRC instituted a damages claim for R15050. the action was unsuccessful. Medical records included.

Trollip, J

The client, a minor, was shot by members of the South African Police in Reiger Park in 1989, resulting in extensive injuries. The LRC instituted a claim for R335 000. The LRC then referred the case to a private attorney who increased the claim to R600 000. The matter was settled before trial for R400 000.

Tshabangu, MD

On 8 December 1984 at Komatipoort Border Post the client was arrested by members of the South African Police on suspicion of being an illegal alien, despite having shown them his South African identity documents. Thereafter he was detained at various centres and repeatedly assaulted by members of the South African Police until his release ion 29 March 1985. He suffered injuries as a result of the assaults and lost his job. A claim for damages was instituted which was settled in the client's favour for R9150. Also see 1.22.3.1.1.

In 1986 the client, a minor, was assaulted by members of the South African Police. The LRC instituted a claim for R2000. The matter was settled. A separate case was instituted by M Tsiani, which was also settled.

Vinjwa, MC

In May 1987 MC Vinjwa was involved in an accident. He left his car and returned to Johannesburg to find someone to tow it for him. When he returned, the car was gone. He traced it to Willie Botes Motors. On 25 July 1987 at Willie Botes Breakdown Services, Kroonstad, he was assaulted by Botes and by members of the South African Police. The LRC assistied him in a claim for damages against the Minister of Law and Order. Items include court papers, the district surgeon's report, mechanical report and statements. The claim was settled in the client's favour for R3750.

Jack, M

In October 1981 the client was arrested in Dube Village, Soweto, and taken to Brixton, where he was detained till the next day. The police apparently wanted information regarding his brother, whom they were seeking. He was assaulted and tortured during this time. The South African Police denied any knowledge of the arrest, detention or assault. The LRC instituted a claim for R3000 damages. The client was awarded R1700 by the court.

Khwezi, JP

On 6 June 1991, the client, a sixteen year-old minor, was arrested by police on suspicion of having stoned a car. He was repeatedly assaulted by members of the South African Police. The LRC instituted a claim for damages of R20 000. The matter was settled for R2447.90. Medical records relating to incident included.

On 1 September 1987 the client was assaulted by members of the South African Police as well as members of the South African Defence Force for reasons that are not apparent from the documentation. As a result of injuries sustained, a suit for damages was institured which was settled in the client's favour for R7000. Contains medical reports.

On 12 October 1984 client was assaulted by members of the South African Police in Meadowlands, for unknown reasons. The LRC instituted an action for R3000 damages which was settled out of court for R1200.
