Delmonica Court

The LRC represented several clients who were tenants at Delmonica Court in Johannesburg. The lessor, Wanderers Home (Pty) Ltd, attempted to increase the rent, but the tenants discovered that the building was rent controlled and that they had in fact been paying too much. They then paid the rent stipulated by the Rent Control Board. The lessor then attempted to secure summary judgements against all the clients, but the matters were withdrawn. No indication of how the matter was settled.

Residents of Ritz Plaza

A dispute between Berville Properties and tenants of the Ritz Plaza in 1988 resulted in the tenants making part payment of the rental. The building was in a state of disrepair. They were given notice to vacate the premises by 30 December 1988. This was ignored resulting in a Supreme Court case being scheduled for February 1989. With the LRC representing the tenants it was agreed to take the case to arbitration to determine a reasonable rental. Includes press clippings.

Volume 1, Joseph Free vs Minister of Defence, Case no.: 1137/92

In September 1992, the SADF proposed that the Khosis community move from their section of the Lohatla Battle School and relocate to Jenn-Haven. 38 families resisted removal. As a result, the members of this community experienced harassment by the SADF. The gates to the Gathlose-Maremane reserved were closed, denying the members of the community access to their land. This case was a contempt application brought by Joseph Free, as representative of the Khosis community against the Minister of Defence.
