143 men in various cities around South Africa made simultaneous declarations to refuse to serve in the South African Defence Force (SADF). Here Andre Zaaiman, a former infantry captain and combat veteran, explains his reasons at a press conference held by the Cape Town Group EDICESA (Ecumenical Documentation and Information Centre for Eastern and Southern Africa). Behind him is a banner which states: "We won't fight in the SADF " Cape Town, 3 August 1988.

Police lay siege to the headquarters of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in central Johannesburg. Police made thorough checks of mourners vehicles to prevent cameras being taken in to the funeral in Alexandra. Funerals were ways in which protest could take place.
Shocked Progressive Federal Party (PFP) workers react to the news of the loss of another PFP constituency to the National Party (NP) as results were broadcast over national television. About 2000 people participated in an 'Open City' walk to indicate their opposition to the Group Areas Act which reserves certain residential areas for different race groups. This participant, with a banner saying "it's my country I will live where I choose to!!", was instructed not to hold his banner because the police had forbidden the display of any banners and posters. He tied the poster to his back so was not 'holding' it.
