Police made thorough checks of mourners vehicles to prevent cameras being taken in to the funeral in Alexandra. Funerals were ways in which protest could take place.
A man kicks away a tear gas canister fired by South African Riot policemen during rioting which broke out in Duduza township on 18 May 1985. People said the unrest was provoked by the police who fired tear gas at some of the thousands of people returning from the funeral of a young unrest victim. Later police fired rubber bullets to disperse groups of stonethrowers.
The security forces are called in on May Day to Khotso House, the headquaters of the South African Council of Churches (SACC). Police stand with guns outside the building.
A student in possession of an anti election sticker is harassed and searched by the police at a polling booth in Athlone on 22 August - Day of the election for the coloured house of representatives. Policeman found a "don't vote" sticker.
