Ntuli, B

The LRC was approached by B Ntuli and E Nthlangamandla who were members of a committee appointed by Inkatha to investigate the deaths of hostel members at KwaThema Hostel on the East Rand between 1987 and 1988. The committee was not satisfied with the progress made by the Benoni Murder and Robbery Unit and wanted the matter investigated by senior police not linked to Benoni Murder and Robbery Unit, since they feared a police cover-up. An affidavit by B Ntuli was sent by the LRC to MP Helen Suzman, who in turn sent it to Adrian Vlok, then Minister of Law and Order,.

Bagley, PD

On 4 June 1981, members of the South African Police Riot Squad stormed the Riverlea Secondary School. They used sjamboks to assault several learners who claimed not to be participating in protest action. Tear gas was also used. Several learners suffered injuries and the LRC assisted them, including the PD Bagley's daughter, in suing the South African Police. The matter was settled out of court with Bagley being paid R800.

Mahlangu, B

On 20 August 1987 members of the South African Police arrested and assaulted B Mahlangu at Berea, Johannesburg. He sued the Minister of Law and Order for damages. The materials contain correspondence, court papers that include instruction to counsel, receipts, a statement by the victim and the record of Mahlangu's previous convictions.

Maleka, P

The client was assaulted by members of the South African Police in September 1992 in Alexandra. He was dragged from his house, hit with the butt of a rifle, kicked and punched, and then shot in the face, and as a result lost the use of his left eye. The LRC brought aclaim for damages. A trial date was obtained but the matter was settled when the client accepted an offer of R55000 plus costs.

Malunga, LM-Tembisa

On 1 September 1987 the client was assaulted by members of the South African Police as well as members of the South African Defence Force for reasons that are not apparent from the documentation. As a result of injuries sustained, a suit for damages was instituted which was settled in the client's for R6000. Contains medical reports.

Maseko, VN

The client was picked up by members of the South African Police on 29 April 1993. He was accused of housebreaking and was assaulted by members of the South African Police. He was taken to court the next day, but the magistrate withdrew the charges. The LRC instituted a claim for R20000 damages. The matter was settled on the day of the trial when the client accepted an offer of R7500 plus costs. Contains medical reports.

Mathebula, P

The LRC represented the client after he had been assaulted by members of the South African Police on 11 December 1979 at Mapetla Hostel in Soweto by striking him in the face with a rifle butt. During the assault a bullet was dislodged from the rifle. The LRC tried to use the bullet to ascertain the name of the policemen who had assaulted the client. However, the Minister stated that the people involved could not be traced. The LRC was consequently unable to assist the client in bringing a damages suit against the South African Police.

Matsepe, N

Kroonstad Orange Free State.

The client, a paralegal in the Moakeng Advice Office, Kroonstad, went into Kroonstad with a friend to shop on 6 August 1991. Two white and one black policemen entered the store. They accosted the client, slapping and kicking him. The police charged him with assaulting a police officer (case A960/91). The LRC represented him, and he was acquitted. They then instituted an action for damages. which was settled when the client accepted R4000. Contains medical reports.
