The appointment of H.S. Sharpe as Assistant Bishop, 1922 and charges brought against Archdeacon Sharpe by Miss E.M. Stringer, resulting in a Commission of Enquiry, held in February 1923. Members of the Commission were F.S. Baines, Bishop of Natal, Rev. C. Rolt, Dean of Cape Town and J.O. Nash, Coadjutor Bishop of Cape Tewn. Question arose of whether a Synod was necessary to confirm the appointment of an Assistant Bishop. Archdeacon Sharpe resented the findings of the Commissien, that he was immature, hasty and high-handed and demanded a public vindication of his character.
