Scene of election posters for the parliamentary by-election for the House of Delegates. A large number of helpers and high profile politicians and police presence, but very few voters. About 270 people arrived at the polls to cast their vote, with a further 1063 casting 'special' votes prior to election day - in all a 16% turnout.

Police lay siege to the headquarters of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in central Johannesburg. Police claimed they were searching for 3 ANC members allegedly hiding in the building. The building and the surrounding area were sealed off for over 6 hours and the press denied access under emergency regulations. Johannesburg 22 April 1987. Police made thorough checks of mourners vehicles to prevent cameras being taken in to the funeral in Alexandra. Funerals were ways in which protest could take place.

Lawyer Priscilla Jana holding Albertina Sisulu Molefe, Daughter of Popo Molefe, at a May Day meeting in Lenasia. Jana persuaded police to allow the meeting to be held, about 400 people attended the meeting despite a heavy police presence both in and outside the hall.

About 2000 people participated in an 'Open City' walk to indicate their opposition to the Group Areas Act which reserves certain residential areas for different race groups. This participant, with a banner saying "it's my country I will live where I choose to!!", was instructed not to hold his banner because the police had forbidden the display of any banners and posters. He tied the poster to his back so was not 'holding' it.
