A student in possession of an anti election sticker is harassed and searched by the police at a polling booth in Athlone on 22 August - Day of the election for the coloured house of representatives. Policeman found a "don't vote" sticker.
The Federation of South African Trade Unions (FOSATU) factory workers at the Kellogg's factory in Springs on the day of the 1983 referendum, where only white people could vote. They holds a pamphlet: vote 'no'! C'cha in Sotho and Zulu. They are protesting the referendum.
A team of 5 runners left from near Pollsmoor prison at the start of a relay scheduled to end at a Gugulethu Sports Stadium as part of the Mandela 70th birthday celebrations. However the runners were arrested shortly before arriving in Wynberg. Police and military also sealed off the Stadium in Gugulethu and prohibited the sporting events which were due to take place there.
