A pupil at the whites-only Johannesburg Girls High School collects signatures for a petition calling for the opening of the school to all races. The school, which is situated in a grey (illegally racially mixed) area, will be closed at the end of the year because of drop in numbers of white school children in the suburb. A multi-racial 'Swim-in' was organised by the Democratic Party (DP) at a swimming pool in central Johannesburg as part of a campaign to defy apartheid laws in the city. In terms of the Group Areas Act, difference races are forced to use different amenities.
