He describes how his store and farm are prospering, how exceedingly busy he is and how he is looking for a partner. He has been visited by Dr Rutherford, the government surveyor; he hopes to get the appointment of field-cornet. He is building a new ferry-boat and experimenting with dried fish. Also engaged in building a new farmhouse on the other side of the river.

On page 113 is a sketch of the district and his farm. Describes a journey to Richmond. Copper has been discovered, which may be shipped from his river.

Protests against Bishop Colenso's falso teaching in The Romans and The Pentateuch ineluding a petition from Natal clergy that Bishop Colenso be asked to resign. Bishop Welby of St. Helena assents to Gray's judgment on Colenso. Bishop Callaway of St. John's points out that the laity are not yet ready to accept a self-governing South African church. Resolutions are received from St. Paul's Church, Durban, protesting against the proposed reading of sontence on Colenso and against appointing a successor to him. The Wesleyans in Durban support Bishop Gray. Clergy of the Diocese of Natal and male communicants declare their adherence to the Church of England doctrine, and their wish that a petition be sent to the Queen to remove Bishop Colenso, that a provincial synod be held soon and that W.J. Butler be appointed the new bishop. The Church Defence Association asserts that W.J. Butler can-not become bishop unless appointed by the 'Sovereign Head of the Church'.
