H.T. Lukin to C.P. Crewe

Half Lukin's brigade still at Solum owing to transport difficulties due to the presence of submarines in the Mediterranean. Hopes to leave for France next week.

Walter Long to C.P. Crewe

Long is anxious to correct Crewe's misapprehension that Long suggested that Crewe and his friends failed to appreciate the value of Botha's services. Long states that it is only the general public in South Africa who support the Unionist Party, who desire to oppose Botha's government and who do not appreciate Botha's difficulties. Long agrees that General Van Deventer has done well. General Northey has been offered the Governorship of the East African Protectorate.

T. Smartt to C.P. Crewe

Describes the 3rd reading of the Flag Bill. Smartt asks Crewe, through the medium of the "Dispatch", to avoid antagonising the moderate Dutch over the flag question.

Smartt discusses the various proposals which have been made for the design of the new flag. The Senate has asserted itself strongly on the Tin and Steel Bill, National Flag and Precious Stones Bills. The House will meet in October.

Describes the strike of the miners which commenced at the Kleinfontein Mining Company and spread to Germiston, Randfontein and Johannesburg. Chaplin gives an analysis of the causes of labour unrest and blames the situation on lack of government support in maintaining order. An additional danger is that the natives might be infected with rebelliousness too.
