This material documents covers a range of subjects relating to detention and trial and in some cases mention particular detainees.

Clippings

These contain reports of arrests and detentions for a wide range of offences. Some were for the possession of items with banned organisation names on them. Other offences were the possession of banned literature, sabotage, murder, supporting a banned organisation or protesting the governments apartheid policies.

Kairos - case files

These are Kairos files for individual cases. They consist of mostly press clippings, but some files contain documents such as inquest reports.

Kairos TRC database of torture and deaths

These cases come from the Kairos database with information about torture and/or death in detention and supported the work Kairos carried out for the research department of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The database was not finished and sources of different files may not be complete. The numbering reflects the case file numbers allocated by Kairos. Each file has a summary sheet of information compiled by the Kairos researchers. Some reports are filed together. Access restrictions apply to this database.

Reports

These include reports from Kairos, reports and published letters from the United Nations, the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, Amnesty International and other reports on torture and deaths in detention. Material relates to investigations, campaigns and personal testimony.

Clippings and articles

These include reports and analysis of the presence of foreign torturers in South Africa, reports about two members of the medical profession who helped reveal the incidence of torture and abuse of detainees, Drs Wendy Orr and Jonathan Gluckman.

Reports of sentencing, executions and details of cases. Summaries and statistics of death row and executions and press releases about further cases. See also 2.7.1.1. for lists from the 1960s in the DPSC papers.
