Residents of Asiatic Bazaar

The Germiston City Council issued eviction notices to 18 families living in an area known as Asiatic Bazaar. They were living there in homemade zinc structures, many of which were partially open to the elements. The Council tore down some of these structures and some of the more permanent brick structures. The LRC was approached for assistance. Representations on humanitarian grounds to the Germiston City Council and its attorneys resulted in the provision of interim relief.

Residents of Ritz Plaza

A dispute between Berville Properties and tenants of the Ritz Plaza in 1988 resulted in the tenants making part payment of the rental. The building was in a state of disrepair. They were given notice to vacate the premises by 30 December 1988. This was ignored resulting in a Supreme Court case being scheduled for February 1989. With the LRC representing the tenants it was agreed to take the case to arbitration to determine a reasonable rental. Includes press clippings.
