Reports, statements and other documents. These include Amnesty International News Service releases and Reports. Children in detention

Children were detained for a number of reasons. Even the very young were detained as a perceived threat to the state. Others were detained in the company of a detained adult or because of criminal activities. Children were at risk especially when detained with adults. There were cases of torture and abuse of young activists.

Banning

Banning consisted of restrictions on association and travel placed on individuals. They could be confined to their homes, limited to a certain area, forbidden to attend meetings, have to report in to a police station at regular intervals and not communicate with organisations among other restrictions. People could also be deported and non-SA citizens were at risk. Organisations that were banned had their operations terminated and it became an offence to further the aims of a banned organisation. Meetings, marches and numerous forms of protest were also banned.
