Extracts from his Journal, describes journey in 1841, from March 4-10, including rudeness of a young Dutchman and kindness shown to them by Mr von Zijl with whom they stayed at Uitkomst; showered with provisions when they departed; crossed Elephant's river and arrived at Ebenezer, a Rhenish Society institution; greeted in friendly way & helped across river by Rev Haahn.

Describes Rhenish station and Terlingen family - a new station, bare & uncomfortable but work going ahead for building. Leaves on 10th March, meets with Boer herder poorly clad and with little shelter, yet father a rich man. Describes barren nature of the Karoo; stayed with Mr Newhout, field cornet. Comments on poverty-stricken nature of Boer houses and their own ill-kempt appearance. Reached Zwart Doorn River. Covers period 11th-13th March 1841.

Wesleyan Missionary, Journal, 17 July 1819 - 21 June 1841 June 21

Describes his journey to South Africa in 1821 and the difficulties he met at Maquassi mission station in the Western Transvaal, where he tried to convert the Barolong and Griquas to Christianity and to teach them the elements of agriculture. Also covers the years he spent in missionary work in Cape Town.

The scrap-book contains broadsides pertaining to the theatre and one of a scurrilous nature; press clippings of poetry, anecdotes, cartoon and news events of the day such as the death of George III in 1820 and Napoleon in 1840; coats of arms and manuscript lists of jurymen for the county of Norfolk (UK). The name Hambleton Custance (High Sheriff for Norfolk) appears on some of the press clippings and he may have been the compiler of the scrap-book.
