Tape cassettes with recordings of interviews and talks, c. 1990, including an interview with Walter Sisulu on radio 702. Also 4 transcripts of interviews (unrelated to the recordings) about street committees, the role of the police and crime in the townships in the 1980s.

This manuscript, No. 4050 II is from the Phillips Mss 25485 and is entitled "Cape of Good Hope 1798". It was compiled by Lord Macartney, although it is not in his own hand.

There are 203 pages, bound into a volume, and made up as follows:

"Note of possession, taken of the Bay of Saldanha by Andrew Shillinge and Humphrey Fitzherbert 3rd July A.D. 1620, in the name of the King of England. Extracted from the records of the East India Company by Mr James Cobb in December 1796 for Lord Macartney".

This describes the peaceful possession taken by Saldanha (Table) Bay, in the presence of the Dutch and explains why these two commanders of the east India took this actions without order (1) to prevent the Cape falling into Dutch hands and (2) to secure it as a refreshment station for British ships. 6p.

A general description of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope and of the 4 districts of which it is composed, Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Drakenstein, Swellendam and Graaf Rein et.

Subjects covered include geographical.features, climate, boundaries of the districts, anchorages, whale fishing, agriculture, game, goods produced at the Cape and imports into the Cape, justice and revenue.

Statistics are frequently quoted, showing, for example, how the population is increasing and how many people have suffered the death penalty. 102p.

Typed draft with the corrections of some of the chapters which formed the basis of his published work Satyagraha in South Africa (Madras, 1928).

Copy of the incomplete manuscript of Peter Becker's book "The pathfinders: A saga of exploration in Southern Africa", which was published after his death in 1985. Peter Becker (1921-1984) was the author of various books on African history, languages and cultures.

The manuscript is incomplete, starting at page 116 and contains duplicate page numbers with different content.

The collection relates to the protests in Cato Manor in Durban in 1959, and consists of a series of photographs taken by V.L. Pierson during the days of the protests.

The protests, also commonly known as Beerhall Riots, initially broke out against the city's beerhalls. The actual reason though was the looming prospect of mass forced removals from Cato Manor, which had been declared a white zone under the Group Areas Act. Families that had lived there for generations were to be resettled to the racially segregated townships of KwaMashu, Umlazi and Chatsworth.

"The Story of June 16 1976" is a 50 min. radio documentary, produced for the Ulwazi Educational Radio Project, 1996.

The documentary tells the story of the events through the voices of eye-witnesses like Fanyana Mazibuko, Ellen Kuzwayo, Peter Magubane and others.
