Webster, an anthropologist at the University of the Witwatersrand and anti-apartheid activist, was shot on 1 May 1989 outside his house in Troyeville, Johannesburg. Civil Co-operation Bureau (CCB) operative Ferdi Barnard was found guilty of Websters murder in 1998 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
