INTERVIEWS WITH EX-MEMBERS OF SELF-DEFENCE UNITS (SDU's)

This part of the collection consists of interviews with ex-members of Self-Defence Units (SDU's), conducted by Sally Sealey in June 2004. There are 33 interviews recorded on tape cassettes, and photographs of some of the interviewed (see photograph inventory).
Also included 21 pages with a summary of the interviews by Sally Sealey, 9 August 2004, and 11 pages of overview of the interviews, 23 August 2004.

Transcripts are available of most of the interviews as hardcopy and digitally on CD.

Sally Sealey wrote an overview of her findings at the end of the project, as well as a summary of the interviews. See A3.

The collection contains the interviews which were conducted from 2004-2012 as part of a unique and pioneering Archival oral history project undertaken by the Historical Papers Research Archive, University of the Witwatersrand.

The project collected personal experiences, perceptions and stories from former members of the Self Defence Units (SDUs) from Thokoza and Katlehong on the East Rand (Gauteng) and former members of the South African Defence Force (SADF), mainly ex-32 Battalion, ex-31 Battalion, Koevoet and from other permanent force and conscripts.

INTERVIEWS WITH MEMBERS OF EX-32 BATTALION

This part of the collection consists of interviews with ex-members of the 32 Battalion, conducted by Angela McIntyre in 2006/2007. There are 92 interviews recorded on tape cassettes, which have all be converted to digital format.

Interviews conducted in English have been transcribed and are available as hardcopy and digitally on CD - marked with (t).
