Correspondence and despatches to Lord Rosmead. Lagden was Government Secretary and Accountant in 1884, was appointed Assistant Commissioner in 1885 to Sir Marshall Clarke. He established a magistracy in Masupha's country in 1886. In 1890 he acted as Resident Commissioner and was Resident Commissioner from 1893-1901.

Records of British rule in Basutoland and the attitude of the Basutos to British rule; problem of the Basutos being armed; collection of hut tax: prohibition of mineral prospecting n Basutoland; unrest in 1897 and trouble caused by three sons of the Paramount Chief Lerothodi; outbreak of rinderpest; notes and reports of National Pitso opposition of Basuto to federation with other South African states. File also includes miscellaneous items such as Lagden's walk to Coomasie; the Egyptian Campaign 1882-1883, Zululand, native labour and Lagden's correspondence with Chamberlain re his appointment in the Transvaal.
