Residentia Old Residents' Committee

In 1988, 160 residents of the area known as Residentia in Sebokeng were given notice to vacate their properties by the Town Council of Lekoa in order to make way for new developments in the area. The residents had taken occupation of the houses in 1965/1966 after being moved from Meyerton. Residentia was previously a white area, and the stands were fairly large. Residents had been told that they were buying the houses and that after five years the houses would become theirs. However, most did not have documents to prove this. In 1980 they were offered 99 year leases but the price was prohibitive. Many also fell behind in payments for services. Faced with eviction, the residents approached private attorneys who referred them to the LRC. The LRC and Black Sash were asked by Residentia Old Residents Committee to intervene in this infringement of their property rights. Among these infringements were: their properties were being subdivided; builders were using their water supply and toilets; buildings were being erected on parts of their property, and parts of their buildings were being torn down. A lengthy period of negotiation ensued amongst others the Town Council of Lekoa and the Transvaal Provincial Administration. It was decided in principle that the residents would be granted freehold rights to the properties in exchange for subdivision.

Isolomunzi of Evaton (Evaton residents)

The Isolomunzi of Evaton (the Eye of Evaton) was one of several organisations representing the freehold standowners of Evaton. They approached the LRC to assist in challenging the Orange-Vaal Development Administration's attempt to nullify Evaton's freehold status and turn it into a municipal controlled township. The Isolomunzi of Evaton challenged the Orange Vaal Development Board's right to charge them monthly levies on their properties. The materials contain instructions to counsel documents, copies from government gazette, letter of demands of payment to residents by Town Council, newspaper clippings and copies of memorandum submitted by the Residents to the Orange Vaal Development Board.

Renate, K and Stone, JHA

The LRC represented the clients, who each owned a sectional title flat in Majestic Towers, in opposing a rule by the building's administrators which excluded domestic workers who stayed on the property from having visitors. The court ruled that the rule, imposed by the trustees of the building, was invalid because it did not meet the requirements of either a management rule or a conduct rule as laid down by the Sectional Title Act. Includes a few press clippings relating to the case.

Madikila, BG

The LRC represented BG Madikila in claiming damages as a result of wrongful, unlawful and intentional assault by two members of the Tumahole Town Committee which resulted in physical injury. Madikila sued the Town Council of Tumahole R84 000. Material includes an actuarial report, extensive correspondence and notes.
