The Helen Joseph Papers consist of correspondence, diaries, speeches, memoranda, articles, printed items, press cuttings, posters and photographs.
The papers were built up by Helen Joseph during her life time and relate to her personal fight against apartheid. Her papers cover her involvement in politics, the Human Rights Welfare Committee, the 1956 Treason Trial, bannings, banishments, house arrests, detentions, relocations, women's issues, churches and universities.

Subjects are Namibia, education, trade unions, women, detentions, protest theatre and the Black liberation struggle. Includes interviews with H. Barsel, I Heymann, A Sisulu, S. Kentridge, H. Joseph and D. Alexander.

Paintings by C.J. Andersson and his wife Sarah, including some copies of Burchell paintings, portraits of C.J. Andersson, his wife and his father (Llewellyn Lloyd), lithographs from his book Lake Ngami (London, 1856) and water-colours by W.J. Burchell. They relate mainly to South West Africa and a few to South Africa.
There is a detailed inventory of the Andersson collection, but the collection itself (including the originals of the above paintings) is not held at Historical Papers.
