Personal Documents

Passports, credentials, licenses, certificates of confirmation and appointment as sidesman of church, school reports (together with few printed items on his school "Uckfield Grammar").

Diaries

These are 66 notebooks containing his diary continuously from January 1, 1888 to July 31, 1959. The last few entries to September 4 were written up by his daughter, Mary Wright. Entries are mainly of personal and family nature, but do contain reports of his interviews with eminent people and his impressions of events during the Boer War (1899-1902), the strike of 1913, the Rand strike 1922, 2 World Wars, etc. The also show his keen interest in religion, education and the labour movement.

Photographs

10 albums of photographs covering tours W. Hills made to various parts of the world 1936-1956. These albums also contain tourist mementoes and articles on his travels published in his chain of newspapers.

Newspapers

These newspapers give an insight into various aspects of the history of the East Rand, as well as the cultural, sporting and social life. Amongst others: the first Gold mines which were set up in 1887; history of the first townships around the mines; the Town Hall opening, Coronation in 1937, a bank robbery at the National Bank with ú12,000 stolen; and the Rand Rebellion of 1922, often referred to as the Rand Revolt or Red Revolt, which affected especially the East Rand mines, following the Brakpan Mines tragedy.
