Companies and intellectual Property Commission (CIPC)

The CIPC archive contains short extracts from the annual reports for various large South African corporations.

Open Secrets’ primary interest was any reference to S15(a) exemptions, which was a provision in the Companies Act that allowed corporations to withhold information from their annual reports, including information about subsidiaries. The requirements to allow such secrecy were vague.

Open Secrets has also included an excel spreadsheet that lists the records available in the CIPC archive, as well as the long list of companies reports that cannot be found in the CIPC archive. The company records were largely disturbingly incomplete, and often reasons for the absence of annual reports for some of South Africa’s largest corporations were not given.
