Meeting to boycott the election, held in Lenasia

A scene from the election boycott campaign in Lenasia where an excited crowd of 3000 packed the hall and passages of the Civic Centre to hear Transvaal Indian Congress (TIC) publicity secretary Mr Cassim Saloojee, United Democratic Front (UDF) president, UDF patron Dr Allan Boesak and Mrs Albertina Sisulu.

By-election for the House of Delegates: scene outside the polling station in Lenasia

Scene of election posters for the parliamentary by-election for the House of Delegates. A large number of helpers and high profile politicians and police presence, but very few voters. About 270 people arrived at the polls to cast their vote, with a further 1063 casting 'special' votes prior to election day - in all a 16% turnout.

Lawyer Priscilla Jana holding Albertina Sisulu Molefe, Daughter of Popo Molefe, at a May Day meeting in Lenasia. Jana persuaded police to allow the meeting to be held, about 400 people attended the meeting despite a heavy police presence both in and outside the hall.
