The research into the conflict was carried out in 2000/2001 at the Anglo American Platinum Corporation (AMPLATS), as part of the work of the Conflict Resolution Consortium (CRC), which was commissioned by the North West Provincial government. The brief of the research was to examine incidents of violence related to the NUM / WMPU conflict at the AMPLATS mines, which began in 1996.
