Demand by clergy that Bishop Colenso withdraw his book.
The Pentateuch and memorials from clergy condemning it. Legal adyice is sought by the Church but it is imperative to wait until the Privy Council decision on the Long case. The Committee of Lower House of Convocation of the Province of Canterbury, reports that the book is erroneous and dangerous. The English Church Union advises that ancient canon law is the only law on which the Bishop of Cape Town can rely. Addresses are sent by English clergy supporting Bishop Gray. The Colonial Bishoprics Council decides to put the salary for the Bishop of Natal in a separate account. The validity of the excommunication of Bishop Colense is brought to question.
