This collection includes minutes, reports, correspondence, and other documents relating to training projects in human relations in the workplace and management consultancy.

This collection consists of an essay entitled 'David Webster: A fearless defence of legality and due process?' by Glenda Webster. The essay, drawing on material from Glenda Webster's personal collection (not lodged with SAHA), records her experiences of David Webster's contribution to the work of the Detainees' Parents' Support Committee (DPSC), an organisation established in October 1981 to oppose and expose detention without trial in particular and repressive human rights violations in general.

The PTL collection is a small collection (0.5 linear metres). It has been arranged to reflect its main activities. This collection also reflects the increasing militancy of teacher organisations, and the impact the education crisis of the 1980s had on teachers.

Sections A - H deals with the PTL itself and its membership. As the PTL was formed under the state of emergency and operated under repressive conditions, there are no minutes of its executive meetings available as these were not kept. This phenomenon holds true for many organisations during this period who were opposed to the apartheid regime.

Section I - K deals with the whole teacher unity process at the National and the Southern Transvaal regional and NECC level at which the members of PTL were involved. This process culminated in the formation of the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU). Copies of minutes as well as hand-written notes of some of these meetings provide interesting insight to the whole process of the formation of a national teacher organisation

Section L has files kept by the PTL on the various teachers organisations in the country. It was not uncommon for PTL executive members to also be members of some of these organisations, more notably TASA. Section M are miscellaneous documents relating to education that the PTL had collected in the course of its activities.

The collection includes a memoir and a tribute.

The TRC Archival Audit

Between 2003 and 2006, SAHA and Historical Papers, University of Witwatersrand embarked on a project to locate, retrieve and make available records relating to the South African Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC). The project entailed conducting an archival audit of all existing TRC records in order to identify and locate documentation in danger of being lost.

In the process of conducting the archival audit, SAHA and HP located many collections from individuals and organizations that participated in the TRC process, including this collection. The collection is organized by two major themes: activist work in the 1980s and up to 1998 (when the Treatment Action Campaign was formed); and activist work post-1998, concentrated around the Treatment Action Campaign. The brief biographies of Zackie Achmat and Jack Lewis contained in the introduction of this inventory provide some indication of the work done by each as individuals and as part of a collective.

Often either Jack or Zackie would start a project and then include the other in its ongoing implementation. As a result, the authorship of many documents in this collection cannot be clearly attributed to either Jack Lewis or Zackie Achmat.

The collection comprises of documents (hard copies) stored in archive boxes and electronic documents (stored on the SAHA drive according to file number) as well as audio-visual materials (please see the SAHA archivist for access to these documents). There are also a number of posters in the collection that is stored with the SAHA Poster Collection (AL2446).The SAHA Posterdatabase indicates the cross-referencing of the posters to this collection.

In 2013 SAHA conducted an oral history and photographic project exploring the legacy of the 1913 Land Act in three communities (Braklaagte, Driefontein and Mogopa) in South Africa in order to mark the centenary of this act. Contained in this collection are the materials produced and collected in the course of Land Act Legacy Project. The collection consists of oral history materials, photographs taken during the project, materials collected from community members and project documentation.

All Zapiro’s cartoons are drawn with a very sharp pen. Nonetheless only one of his cartoons has ever been ‘pulled’. A cartoon depicting former President FW de Klerk’s responsibility (as head of the Apartheid State and its security forces) for the atrocities that emanated from the notorious “Vlakplaas”, with De Klerk’s head as the proverbial tip of the iceberg, was ‘pulled’ by The Sowetan, for whom the cartoon was drawn. The newspaper was of the opinion that the cartoon was potentially defamatory. Zapiro had therefore to replace De Klerk’s head with that of Eugene de Kock, the self-confessed commander of “Vlakplaas”. Both cartoons form part of the Collection.

This collection was initially arranged by subject matter. In order to portray the sequence of events during the TRC the cartoons have now been arranged by year.
