The collection relates to the protests in Cato Manor in Durban in 1959, and consists of a series of photographs taken by V.L. Pierson during the days of the protests.

The protests, also commonly known as Beerhall Riots, initially broke out against the city's beerhalls. The actual reason though was the looming prospect of mass forced removals from Cato Manor, which had been declared a white zone under the Group Areas Act. Families that had lived there for generations were to be resettled to the racially segregated townships of KwaMashu, Umlazi and Chatsworth.

Cedes 10 claims in the Botha reef to Rhodes and 5 claims to Donovan in full settlement of claims against Du Toit. Signatories: J.B. Robinson, C.J. Rhodes, A.W. Francis for F. Donovan. Witness: C. Jeppe. A provision in Rhodes' handwriting reads 'Mr. Rhodes makes this settlement in order to avoid the worry and annoyance of legal controversies but he begs to place on record his opinion that Mr. du Toit has shewn a total disregard as to the obligations of our contract'.

The collection contains the records of the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS), a civil society organisation based at the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand. It includes memoranda and other documents on political trials, conscientious objection, detentions, repression, records relating to the ANC Constitutional Committee and administrative documentation.

The collection contains records of court cases processed between the years of 2005 and 2016 and retained by the Centre of Applied Legal Studies (CALS), a civil society organisation based at the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand.

The scope of this collection relates in the main to aspects of education in post-Apartheid South Africa, with inputs from various entities, organisations and Government departments.

The Historical Papers Archive received the records of the CSVR in 2007, representing the work of the CSVR through its projects and programmes. It should be noted, that the material received is quite patchy and does not cover the full extent of the work done in the various Units and of all the projects and programmes of the CSVR exhaustively, gaps will have to be filled through subsequent archival deposits. Also, reference is made to the CSVR's TRC collection in an earlier collection received by SAHA, collection number AL3110.
